Pop ups can be really effective for conversion rate optimisation for ecommerce stores, startups, or any website that wants to drive leads, emails, and ultimately sales. I've used plenty of software providers in this space and I decided to put this detailed guide together to help marketers and founders make the right choice for them.

I've been a Growth Marketer for 8+ years (eCommerce/DTC 6+ years), and love developing strategies and executing channels for eCommerce/Shopify brands. I've used hundreds (and hundreds) of software tools to help execute on key strategies for eCommerce growth, and I'm here to help highlight which tools, software and apps can help you scale your store.

I love pop up software for website CRO and campaigns. It’s worked wonders for clients and startups I work with when it comes to generating leads, email sign ups and more importantly, generating more sales.

As a marketer or founder reading this, you most likely already know the benefits of what pop ups can do for your website and marketing goals.

So, what are the best software options for your business?

Before I share my top recommendations in this guide, it’s good to have a little checklist to use as a personal assessment when going through these pop up software options. These are also questions I often refer to and use when going through new providers I’m considering.

  • Is the software best for eCommerce or B2B?
  • What are the the design customisation options? Is the popup builder easy to use? I’ve often found this to be quite mixed in this particular space so it’s important to do your research. This is certainly the case for mobile experience.
  • Do they provide beautiful looking templates? Most of the time, great looking templates is a good sign.
  • What segmentation and targeting options does it have? How advanced is it?
  • What integrations do they have? Do they at least have Zapier?
  • What sort of pop up types can you do? Time based? CTA side bars/embeds?
  • Can you do split-testing? Then in relation, what does analytics look like?

This is a preliminary list you can use. Of course, you may have different requirements for your business, but I’m hoping this can help you choose the right pop up software for your eCommerce store or online business.

Time to get those emails and drive more sales! Let’s rock into it.

1. Optimonk

OptiMonk is one of my favourites. This pop up builder allows you to browse through more than 300 high-converting templates that are professionally designed for different use cases. You can also customise pop ups with the user-intuitive drag-and-drop editor to match the look of your brand. It is even equipped with a plethora of elements such as images, buttons, countdown timers, text boxes, and more.

  • You can quickly integrate this tool with your website using the short JavaScript code. You can always contact the support team via email as well if you have any problems with installation.
  • To optimise the conversion rate of your website pop ups, you can use advanced triggering options such as on-click triggering, exit-intent, and scroll-based triggering to display the pop up message at the right time.
  • It lets you create relevant pop up messages for each visitor segment on the basis of location, “cart rules”, and even their online behaviour, so you get higher conversions.
  • It offers more than 35 different pop ups according to various use cases like gamification pop ups, full-screen pop ups, and sticky bars rather than the typical classic square pop up.
  • To enhance user experience, OptiMonk provides you with a wide variety of integration options such as Klaviyo, MailChimp, HubSpot, WordPress, Woo Commerce, Shopify, and Shopify Plus.
  • The advanced analytics feature helps you monitor your campaigns' performance the right way. If you have connected your Shopify store with this app, you can also view the share of money (revenue) generated by OptiMonk.
  • With A/B testing, you can analyse the ideal campaign for you. Moreover, one of its features allows you to automatically deactivate the lower-performing variants and activate the higher-performing ones for the best results.

The good news is that you can use this software for free with the free plan forever! ⚡ Frequently Asked Questions ⚡

Which exit intent pop up has the best mobile responsiveness design?

Many of the platforms I spoke about should have a mobile option in place for creating a lightbox popup. Having said that, there are also many that don’t have the best popup builder capabilities for mobile, which can often be frustrating when you design an awesome desktop design but then doesn’t render properly. From my experience, the best pop up tools that ensure good responsiveness experiences on mobile are Wishpond, Popup Smart and Privy.

Can exit intent popups help reduce your bounce rate?

Absolutely they can. Creating an exit intent popup can help drive desired action steps and CTAs that you want visitors to take before they leave the site. Whilst it can help reduce bounce rates, it’s important to remember that pop ups should be used mainly for exit intent. You can use pop ups for other use cases as part of your marketing strategy, but often times they can become quite annoying if they’re too frequent. Use them sparingly and ensure they are triggered at the right time.

What are the best popup plugins and tools for WordPress and eCommerce Shopify Stores?

There are many options out in the market, whether it be focused plugins and popup tools which I have outlined in this guide. There are also options for popups as part of larger marketing automation tools such as Hubspot and Ortto. However, for software which is focused on primarily on creating popup experiences for WordPress that I recommend are Optinmonster, Justuno and Optimonk. Then for Shopify stores, the best apps I recommend are Privy, Wisepops and Sleeknote.

What are the various popup types and event-based campaigns that can help increase conversions?

There are many popup campaign and event-based triggered ideas you can try, including fullscreen popups, floating banners, scroll triggers for a certain blog post, timed pop ups for those long enough on the site, and loads more. The event targeting capabilities combined with personalised customer journey experiences are great to have as part of the software options mentioned which combined are great for driving conversions.

What are the best free pop up tools you recommend?

Many of the tools mentioned give you the ability to create a free account and test out how the software works, whether it be for a free trial period of even freemium. The reality is, to unlock more advanced pop up features such as advanced targeting, advanced design customisation, amongst other items, you will naturally have to pay. Additionally, most have paid plans which are tied to the amount of views or visitors you have coming to the site. For those with decent free plans, they are Poptin, PopupSmart and Hellobar.
